Many anglers will swear by the rig that has always worked for them and that's great! This rig is awesome and has always worked for us! So here it is:. On your 50 wide 2 speed reel you will have 80 pound test Monofilament. From there you will have a 25 foot long pound test wind on leader crimped to a pound test snap swivel.
Your trolling lead comes next. Snap on the trolling lead which on the other end has another snap swivel that will snap onto the Shock chord. The Shock chord should be no longer than about feet of - pound test Mono that again snaps to the feet of - pound test, Multi-strand cable that your lure is on.
Here is a Magbay kit that comes with 2 trolling weights, 2 shock chords and 4 lures at a pretty good price. To purchase all these separately you will be spending quite a bit more for quality gear! Check it out! The best Spread set up for High Speed Trolling is a 3 rod spread with a bent butt rod on each side of the boat and a straight butt rod in the center for your long bait.
How many rods you fish will be determined by how many anglers you are with and their experience level. Some go as many as 6 rods. We recommend 3. Why only 3 rods? If you have a 6 rod spread, thats 5 lines you may have to move if someone hooks a Wahoo. Three rods is more than enough in my opinion. The Bent Butt rods on either side help keep that line closer to the water which helps that bait sit lower in the water.
The middle rod is a a straight butt rod to help it sit out further behind the boat. Sometimes the boat will spook the fish so it's always good to have a bait well behind the rest.
For the middle long bai t you will want to let out about half the reel. You will also use a lighter trolling lead for the middle rod.
For each side rod you will be using the same amount of weight and you want it heavier than the middle long bait rod. You will want to stagger each rod in how far out you let the line. So let out about a third of a spool on one side and about a quarter of a spool on the other. Staggering you line lengths is crucial to avoid getting tangled while turning and trolling.
We have created this visual below to help. If you prefer using live bait, than a slower troll using down riggers is a great option. If you only have one down rigger, drop the ball down about 40 - 60 feet deep. Using multiple down riggers you have the option to drop at different depths to see which works better.
When using two down riggers drop one to 40 feet deep and the other to 60 feet deep. You won't be going very fast while slow trolling. I wouldn't go any faster than 8 knots with this method so don't get on the throttle too much. Remember the faster you troll the higher your bait will rise in the water column. Slow trolling also allows you to get away with using slightly lighter tackle. Don't go too light though, these fish are big fighters! When Slow Trolling live bait most experienced anglers will recommend using a stinger rig to rig your live bait.
One thing that i would add to this video is the variation to use multi strand stainless cable leader and crimp it instead of using the Haywire Twist that he uses on his single strand wire leader. There are several reasons for this.
One, is that it is just down right stronger and more reliable. Another benefit of the multi strand cable is that it won't kink as easily as the single strand wire. Once single strand wire is kinked it loses all strength and integrity. Imagine a 60 pound Wahoo smashing your bait at 60 mph If you have any weak link in your tackle you will lose that fish.
You don't want to lose fish from kinked wire. As he mentioned in the video you can use treble hooks for your trailing hooks. This comes down to preference more than anything. Wahoo are known to be slashers! Meaning they will bite the tails off their prey, disable the bait fish and then come back for the kill! So whichever trailing hooks you decide to use make sure the are stronge and razor sharp! The style of fishing you are doing will determine the gear best suited for catching Wahoo.
If you are high speed trolling, slow trolling, drifting and jigging etc. A lot of it comes down to preference as well. Do not forget that! If you are going to be casting a jig while drifting, a 7 foot rod is probably a good Choice.
If you will be trolling, most experienced anglers would recommend the shorter stiffer foot rods with roller guides. Your rod choice will always depend of your style of fishing. Bent butt trolling rods are good to use on each side of the boat and the Straight butt rods are what you want to use for your long "shotgun" bait. Do you need a 2 speed reel? Will you be glad you have a 2 speed reel?
When High Speed Trolling you will have anywhere from ounces of trolling lead weight to heavy lure with hopefully a huge big Wahoo one the hook! Spend a day reeling that in and you will be glad you have that low gear to help you reel all of that in!
Sone of our favorites and favorites of many anglers are here below. All very good, quality reels! You get what you pay for with these top of the line reels!
Electric reels are nice to have especially in the outer islands where there are a lot of sharks around. Some people argue that electric reels are not very sporting and that,s fine Just know, If you are going to be fishing where you know the Tax man lives, be willing to pay the dues!
LP reels. Pro Tip: A good habit to get into is to secure your reel with a safety line. Most Trolling reels are built with plates with holes in them for this exact purpose. You don't want a big fish pulling your entire rod and reel into the depths of Davy Jones Locker!
Like most anglers fishing in the Ocean you usually have a preference to what line you like to use. Usually it is dependent on the type of fish you are targeting. Wahoo, for example, have razor sharp teeth and can easily bite through most fishing line and even chord used in a lot of Flutter jigs. For this reason it is crucial to have the right line and rig set up! Due to the Wahoos razor sharp teeth it is essential to use something they will not be able to bite through.
Stainless Steel and Titanium are popular options. Steel and salt water don't mesh well as it will rust quickly. Stainless Steel and Titanium provide strength and durability that will not be affected by the harsh salt water conditions.
Stainless Steel Cable is used as a leader. Usually rigged onto the Lure already. A titanium wire leader is used more with rigging live bait and will prevent the fish from biting through the line resulting in less lost fish. Smart anglers will even replace the chord used on flutter jigs and other lures with titanium wire. Braided line has come a long way over the years and is getting more and more popular among anglers. Some of the pros to Braided line is that it is thin, and strong and you can fit a lot of high pound test line on your reel.
Some of the cons to braided line is that there is no stretch. If your drag is not set just right, you could break that line and lose a nice fish! Another Con is that if the braid is frayed or damaged in any way the integrity of that line is compromised. So make sure that braid is new and or undamaged. You don't want to risk losing a nice fish! Monofilament is a good all round line choice. If you want to be able to use your reel for various species of fish without having to change the line, then mono is a great option.
Monofilament is also more forgiving than Braid or wire line. It has way more stretch to it so if you don't have the drag set just right it won't break off.
For High speed trolling for Wahoo i would go with 80 pound test monofilament on your reel. You could probably get away with slightly lighter pound test but 80 is just right for most applications. If you will be slow trolling live bait while your are out Wahoo fishing you can probably get away with lighter line. Your high speed trolling weights will vary in size depending on where they are placed in the spread.
You will want your heavier weights on the each side and a lighter weight in the middle. If you are using a 24 ounce weight in the middle i would double it for the side rods and use a 48 ounce weight for each side rod. You want a Trolling weight that has cable on both ends.
If it is not on a wire cable the wahoo will slash right through your line and you will lose hundreds of dollars worth of tackle. This helps them blend into the white wash better preventing strikes and damage the weights. Most high speed trolling Wahoo lures will look relatively similar. Most Wahoo lures will be bullet shaped to race through the water easily. Some have a conical nose while others are blunt nosed.
There are different traights to many lures. Having a variety of options is key to being successful! The best Wahoo Lure colors will be the darker colors.
Blacks and purple combinations are a favorite of many anglers. Black and blues seem to work well as do black and red. What you want is the contrast. The contrast makes the lure more visible in the water. Jetted Wahoo lures are lures that have little holes drilled into the nose of the lure.
These holes let water pass through creating water jets and bubbles that make the lure skirt fan out creating a bigger profile for the Wahoo to see.
Jetter Wahoo Lures can be very effective! A must have for your Wahoo lure arsenal! Blunt nose Wahoo Lures are good when you want to lure to have some action to it and make a good "smoke trail". Don't shy away from having a couple of these on hand. Islander style Wahoo Lures are double skirted lures that create a big profile bait. These lures are pretty much a staple in every serious wahoo fishermans lure collection.
These are super effective and will catch you lots of fish! Acrylic Wahoo lures are a lighter style lure. Most have some kind of reflective flashing incorporated to draw attention to them. A great lure to have on hand, but make sure you adjust the trolling weight to a heavier weight so the lure remains below the surface.
You need a heavier Trolling lead with these lighter lures. Many anglers believe that lures with eyes trigger more strikes than lures without eyes. Might be a good idea to have a few on hand. Again, variety is the key to success!
Having different options to try will pay off big when a certain lure just isn't getting bit! Pro Tip: Make sure you trim the skirt of your lures just above the point of the trailing hook.
This will prevent the skirt from getting in the way of a good hook set. One crucial part of sport fishing is gaffing the fish and getting it on the boat! You do not want this piece of equipment to fail! In my opinion, it is worth spending the extra money to buy a good gaff! For Wahoo fishing make sure your hook is nice and sharp. When you go to gaff the fish make sure you are gaffing toward the boat. Always toward the boat! Gaffing toward the boat pulls the fish in closer, and also gives you a better center of gravity.
If you Gaff away from the boat, it could lead to a missed gaff shot pushing the fish further away from the boat.
It could also leave you leaning over the rail If you do gaff the fish and are leaning over the rail chances are you could end up in the drink. Nobody wants that! There are many types of Gaffs made with different materials.
Aftco is a decent brand you can find on Amazon. Here are a few different options. This should be enough to get your feet wet in the world of Wahoo Fishing!
