Thank you so much for this great list! My daughter caught some tadpoles but she thought one looked just like an axolotl. I showed her that they near extiction, but then we started researching whether it is a salamander larvae, as we have many around here in Oregon. She is very excited now to go search for the items on your list with her magnifying glass. So appreciative of your observations! Thank you, Q.
I try to keep it simple without too many scientific words. It keeps information accessible to folks on many levels of knowledge. You know, after all these years in woods and on the water I never thought about salamanders after they hatched until this morning.
Frogs and toads are all over the Northeast but salamanders are more rare and good at hiding. I have seen them in the spring while skiing in the woods on 2 feet of snow pack searching for a vernal pool for mating.
Their tongues are less mobile than frogs, some aquatic species of salamanders have no muscle in their tongue at all. Also, tadpoles of frogs have no teeth, but larval salamanders do, this is because salamanders use their teeth to eat while most frogs only use them to hold prey in place.
Some adult frogs might not have teeth, or they might only have the top row. Yes, a Salamander is an amphibian like a frog and it has legs and an Eel is a fish. The spots in the egg. One is a frog, the other is a salamander. Both have slept with your mother. Yes ,but the salamander must be small in order for the frog to disgust it. A salamander is a salamander that lives on land.
A aquatic salamander is a salamander that lives in the oceans, lakes, rivers, streams etc. Salamanders don't have the same types of legs as the frog. The frog's legs can jump, the salamanders cannot. Also, young frogs are tadpoles, not so much the salamander. No it is not. The difference between a frog and a bee is that the frog's honey is inedible. They're both frogs. There is no significant difference between a frog and another species of frog. A mudskipper is a fish while a frog is an amphibian.
Frog, toad, salamander and others. Yes, both are. Adult spotted salamanders live about 20 years, but some have been recorded to live as long as 30 years. A well-balanced Salamander or Newt diet consists of: Aquatic — brine shrimp, bloodworms, live and frozen chopped night crawlers. If terrestrial — provide a variety of insects, including gut-loaded recently fed crickets, mealworms, white worms and tubifex worms.
Most frogs do in fact have teeth of a sort. They have a ridge of very small cone teeth around the upper edge of the jaw. These are called Maxillary Teeth.
Frogs often also have what are called Vomerine Teeth on the roof of their mouth. Frogs belong to a group of animals called amphibians.
Frogs are cold-blooded which means that their bodies are the same temperature as the air or water around them. When they are cold they will lay in the sun to warm up and when they get too warm they will go into the water to cool their bodies off.
Amphibians, such as frogs, toads and salamanders, lay eggs in water, even though most species spend the majority of their adult lives on land.
Because of their slender bodies and long tails, salamanders look somewhat like lizards so people often confuse the two. Lizards typically have dry skin; most salamanders stay moist, and many of them use their wet skin as a surface through which to breathe. Most newts have webbed feet and a paddle-like tail, which make it easier to live in the water. Salamanders typically have longer and more rounded tails with well-developed toes for digging in soil.
However, since these lizards have enough venom to kill a dog or cat, keep your pet from trying to play or fight with them. How are salamanders born? Many salamanders are born in the water with gills and as they grow they develop lungs and become terrestrial. Some species retain their gills through their life. Salamanders are able to take up oxygen through the skin; the lung-less salamander can also take up oxygen through the membrane of the mouth.
What is a bunch of salamanders called? A group of salamanders is called a herd or congress. How does a salamander look like? Salamanders are amphibians that look like a cross between a frog and a lizard. Their bodies are long and slender; their skin is moist and usually smooth; and they have long tails.
Salamanders are very diverse; some have four legs; some have two. What do salamanders turn into? But occasionally amphibian development takes an odd turn. Sometimes larvae mature to a reproductive stage without undergoing the normal process of metamorphosis for a land-based adult life.
How can you tell a lizard from a salamander? One visual cue is that lizards usually have external ear-openings and clawed toes. Salamanders lack such features. Salamanders are also amphibians, while lizards are reptiles. The main differences between reptiles and amphibians are that reptiles are covered in dry scales or scutes, while amphibians have moist skins. Do newts jump?
