Individuals conversing one on one, directly or over the telephone, is an example of oral communication. It helps in defining reality, organizing ideas and experiences, and sharing them and also shapes our attitude towards the world.

Oral communication is used in meetings or gatherings where an oral explanation is necessary and even when direct relation is mandatory. It gives immediate feedback developing a relationship between the orator and the listener. In most professional meetings, oral communication is recommended as it increases the level of understanding and also transparency, moreover builds trust.

There are five types of oral communication in-. Oral communication is time-saving as it allows an individual to convey thoughts and ideas directly. It is a secure form of communication for discussing critical and confidential topics as there is a low risk of misunderstandings.

One of the important advantages of oral communication is that it helps in resolving conflicts. When planting your thoughts and concepts, it is hard to harvest the bounty another might offer.

When we try to be heard above the noise around us, we often lose sight of the fact that a whisper can be much more effective in a quiet, listening room than a shout in a crowded building. Silence often creates discomfort, but it is not your responsibility to fill every void with the sound of your own voice.

In order to communicate effectively we must allow silence to be deafening at times. Allow your thoughts and ideas to fill the moments of silence that listening rather than talking creates; then express those thoughts into encouraging words that identify, communicate and motivate change. Effective communication is more than talking. When wishing to share experiences, thoughts, feelings or dreams — converse.

While one needs to converse in order to communicate, not all conversation becomes effective communication. Communication is conversation on steroids, an exchange of thoughts and ideas that results in an investment of time and resources focused toward the accomplishment of an intended consequence.

If there were more effective communicators in Congress we might not have suffered the recent government shutdown that affected more than 80, individuals who ended up pawns in a chess match between narrow-minded conversationalists that were relatively unaffected by the results of their inaction.

Elbert Blakely received a Ph. He has worked in the fields of developmental disabilities, mental health, behavior pharmacology, experimental analysis of behavior, organizational behavior management, and database design.

Blakely has co-authored 25 articles and one book. The articles address research questions in the areas of the experimental analysis of behavior, applied behavior analysis, conceptual issues, and behavior pharmacology. Blakely is an Assistant Professor at Florida Institute of Technology, where he teaches courses in applied behavior analysis, radical behaviorism, and behavior pharmacology. He also provides consultation to organizations and providers who deliver ABA services to children and adults.
