In terms of response, I am going to speak to them after the documentary to see what measures they are taking. Do you think it would be different now? I think Gary Neville was sensational.
I commend him for speaking so openly and honestly about it. I lost a lot of respect for him in that situation. Do you think that is a strong message to send out? I think it was massive. It was a powerful moment to see everyone walking off the pitch. I think if someone has been genuinely racist then we should walk off because why should we stand for it? Until I have all the evidence I do not want to accuse anyone of being racist because I do not think it is fair.
I only feel strong if the full evidence is there. Paul Elliott says that football needs to be its own police force. Could you share your thoughts on that? His sense of humour punctuates even this most serious of subject matter. He starts with his own father who moved to England from St Kitts in and lived through everything that came with being black in Britain in that era. A Rastafarian with dreadlocks, even years later when watching his son play for Leeds City Boys he would have people singing Bob Marley songs at him while others abused Micah on the pitch.
The trials faced by both men sets the tone powerfully. One thing Richards Jr seems to have learned, both from his own life and the experience of making the documentary, is that some racists are lost causes, he believes.
It is a recurring theme. Had he been challenged earlier in his life, his comments imply, would those views become so firmly embedded? That is why Richards takes on, and is still talking to, the social media companies on whose platforms he himself experiences regular racial abuse, both in comments and in direct messages.
How can you get away with that?
