But after waiting months for delivery we were over it and just kept it. I would never buy a sofa from PB again. My husband likes to joke we live in a Pottery Barn catalogue!
When we downsized 2 years ago I went with all new furniture and chose Pottery Barn because I had great success with my other PB furniture including the Pierce Sectional. However — I have been extremely disappointed with our PB Air sectional. One of the designers picked out the fabric knowing we had 2 dogs who love the couch — it was a new fabric — Oatmeal Slub, when we realized it was the lowest grade fabric I questioned the selection but she assured me it would be great and what a bargain!
Note to self — go with your instinct over the designer always! After waiting months the sectional came in with the love seat on the wrong side. The replacement came with the wrong type of cushions. Within a year my sectional looked 10 years old. When I contacted the Furniture department let the Omaha store there was no answer and no answer — I was told there was a backlog and to be patient.
When I finally received an answer 8 months later — nothing could be done because I had the sectional too long. Now I have a 2 year old sectional that looks 10 years old with cushions that I fluff daily and have come to dislike immensely — recommended by the designer who assured me this was the right choice.
I am looking to replace already and considering Poly and Bark if anyone has any comments — much appreciated! It was for an additional slip cover that fit poorly. I was later told by an employee that you should always buy additional slipcovers when you first purchase your sofa. The replacement ones never fit right. Even though it was custom I was able to return it. I worked for Williams Sonoma for 15 years. Every store is critiqued for their amount of sales. That is why they want you to buy in store.
They can be rude about it. Our family has many pottery barn couches thanks to my discount. They have 3 children but I had 4 kids and none of my other couches ever looked this poorly. I have a PB sofa and love it. We have had it for 7 years and it is still wonderful. It is oatmeal basketweave fabric, I believe.
We have three under six by the way, but we do not allow eating in our living room it has no TV — we do popcorn and watch movies in our family room. We also are very mindful about washing hands after meals.
Anyway, ours pilled right away. I was super bummed, but it was so comfortable that I did not mind. I had it professionally cleaned and the man suggested I get a sweater defuzzer for the pills.
It worked amazing! It looks brand new now, 7 years later. I defuzz about every 4 months. So anyone that is experiencing pilling, this is a tip. Thanks for the great blog. Thanks for the review! I never had an issue with either of them. I chose Sunbrella Performance fabrics for both. My cat vomited on both them on a regular basis and the fabric never stained.
A little soap and water and it rinsed right out. I think the choice of fabric has a lot to do with how well cushions hold up. A heavy fabric with a tight weave will keep the cushion from losing its shape. If you like a neat crisp look with defined edges, get a heavy fabric like the chenille or the herringbone the thicker one.
I love the bench cushions! In the store, they felt more firm than the traditional square cushions. Hi Kristel! I am reading through this super helpful review and noticed that you were going with the Big Sur — that is the one I am currently leaning towards so checking to see if you ended up getting it and if so, how you like it so far? Thanks in advance! Hi Tina, did you get the Big Sur? Saw your comment after I posted mine to Krystel lol! Let me know and thank you in advance.
Hi Krystel, Did you ever purchase the Big Sur? It would be amazing if you let me know how your Big Sur is holding up or any tips you may have.
I am looking between the down wrapped or memory foam. Thanks for both of your great posts on your PB You sofas! They have been a great resource as I select a sectional for our family room. In all the photos of your sofas, both in your family room and den, they appear a light cream color. The sole exception is the one photo above in your den on delivery day where it is just sitting on the carpet and the rest of the room is bare.
There it reads a quite a bit darker. It may be an effect of the lighting in that or the other photos or the fact that in this photo it is sitting on similar tone but darker carpet. Would you say that day to day it reads more off white or beige?
I just ordered a swatch of the Performance Everyday Linen in Oatmeal and was surprised by how dark it is, also knowing that it will appear even darker when on an entire sofa. Maybe the current PL Oatmeal is a slightly different color, now than when you purchased your sofas? Anyone have any experience with Maiden Home sectionals? Their prices are definitely more competitive than PB, even with best PB discounts, and they offer a free 3o day return, which is very attractive.
Hi Sloane! So, the tricky part with the fabric is it definitely changes with lighting condition. We have A LOT of windows in our house our living room has windows facing east, south, and west. But know that the fabric actually looks lighter when on a full sofa than on the swatch. But in person, I feel like that borderline looks bright white when on a sofa.
The Oatmeal is just a really good natural linen tone. Hopefully that helps with your decision! I brought home large fabric samples from our local store of both oatmeal and linen. I would say that the linen looks white and the oatmeal looks beige. We have lots of great conversations, we'd love you to join us, click here. How does Room and Board upholstered furniture hold up long-term? Does it last for more than a couple of years with regular use?
I'm considering purchasing a sofa from Room and Board this one in a custom fabric , but before I spend the money I want to be as certain as I can that it's a good investment. We've been to a Room and Board store and tried their floor model out; we all like the way it feels when we sit in it, and we all like the look of the thing.
But a floor model can only tell you so much. I've searched online for long-term reviews and complaints, but haven't come up with much, particularly as regards longevity. What do you wish you'd known before you bought your furniture? What would you caution others about? I'm definitely looking for something on the sigh midcentury modern end of design rather than an overstuffed La-Z-Boy affair.
FWIW, I've looked at Joybird's offerings, and they're appealing, but I'm concerned about the number of complaints I've read WRT their delivery being far, far slower than advertised and their customer service being less than helpful. Also, Pottery Barn's stuff is lovely but we couldn't agree on a comfortable seat depth on any of their sofas; same with Crate and Barrel.
It's great, it's in stellar condition. It will cost as much to reupholster as to replace. But don't let your kids drink juice on the celery-green upholstery. Our Joybird couch and chair feel like new. We and our two large labs have been enjoying them for four years. My experience with delivery and customer service was the opposite of what you've read, to the point that I'm truly shocked. I got a Joybird couch about 4 years ago. About a year ago, one of the cushions developed a big tear in it along the seam.
The other cushion was also flatter than we would have liked. Laurel, can you write about bathroom handle shapes, should they all be matched? What about thrones and basins, can they be from different brands? Shower heads, taps etc. What are the rules? I love bath taps from one brand and basin taps from another.
You just crack me up!! Wanted to make a quick comment that I too have many Pottery Barn pieces, one of the things I do love about the company is that they do stand behind mistakes they make. One year we ordered a beautiful bed and bed linens for my daughter for Christmas. It added up to a lot of money and we were so excited for my daughter to see her new room set up on Christmas morning. Nothing came though, the delivery never arrived.
My daughter opened up a picture. We were so upset and called PB who promptly send out a store employee. They gave us a very large gift card, kept calling to make sure that the bed finally did arrive. The company probably called times to make sure all was okay. My only other beef with them is that some of their styles are definitely going towards the more modern end….
Someone always has something interesting to add. No other blog as good or as entertaining as yours Laurel. I am almost done with my huge remodel and am currently taking pics. I simply purchased all of your resources. I hope to do you proud. Will send some pics soon. But, this has certainly made my day!!!
Thank you, thank you!!! She was more precious than rubies, because she could carry home our orders from PB. We actually by her from a woman named Ruby. She came with a sweet little Shasta trailer which we camped in. I work next door to that William Sonoma in SF. In the Tiffany building.
I have to hold up my hands like blinkers on a horse, just to walk by. I take the train into the City, thankfully, so no room to lug home anything! I have that lantern, the shade is not replaceable, so watch out when cobweb sweeping. Oh wow! How cool that you work next door to that wonderful building, Holly!
I love San Francisco and your wonderful story. I have a sister, Holly and I lived in Palo Alto in the mid 70s. Did you see my bay window story about my time there. When you say the shade on the lantern, do you mean the glass? She was sitting outside all new and fancy when there was a shoot out in front of my house. Shot right below the driver side mirror. Three weeks later a flash flood in New Orleans had her back at the dealership beauty parlor getting fixed up.
She definitely likes when I fill her backside with anything from Pottery Barn. Filled a couple of nicks on the table with paint and good as new. Poor Bullet!!! She sounds most intrepid which I know is crucial for those living in New Orleans. Good thing no one was sitting in the car when that happened!
My super told me a couple years ago that if I ever wanted to sell my car that he would buy it. I refer back to them time and time again when making design decisions for my home. Keep them coming, please! I love Pottery Barn as well. Not sure if you saw it in the store, but they carry a great lamp called the Noah Trophy Table Lamp that has the option of a lighted base.
Loved your post, as always! I wish I had the same experience with Pottery Barn as you. Their customer service has been horrible. Two of the three chairs I ordered came with the wrong fabric. They double charged the delivery and refused a refund, giving me a store credit instead. Never again! As you have been made aware through this experience, there is a lot that can go wrong.
Still, I am wondering why you accepted delivery for chairs that came in with the wrong fabric? But maybe it was someone else home, at the time? Still, because the chair was accepted and signed off as being okay, is a reason that they do have a right to charge you for the delivery. Always, no matter the company. Only getting the refund after receiving the wrong piece is standard for all vendors, as well.
What if the customer decides not to send it back? Then, they are out of pocket. Please understand that I am not chastising you in any way. And that goes for ALL furniture companies, regardless of whether one has purchased online or in person through a store or even through an interior designer.
Just so you know, it was ME who got stuck with these delivery charges more times than I care to count. The other thing that can trip folks up and it did me a couple of times is that I wrote in the order correctly, but when the acknowledgment came back, they goofed and it was not input correctly.
Usually, I caught it, but a couple of times, I did not and had to suffer the consequences. Bottom line is that please know that these issues are not uncommon and are in no way exclusive to Pottery Barn or any other company. I enjoyed this post, and also like pottery barn- things I have my eye on usually show up on your hot sales page eventually- like the Carlisle sofa which comes slipcovered too. Called me Ames. I had just my rugs, cut out paper the size of the items I was most interested in, was asking advice for layouts and what to get — sectional, sofa….
Think you could put up an affiliate link? Are you referring to the brownish and white-ish patterned four chairs that are swivel gliders? They are by Lee and you would need to get them from a dealer. I went into one of our local shops and they had some Juliska flatware on display. I picked up a piece to have a closer look and was shocked how chintzy it was. This is why it is good to see things in person before you buy. That certainly is the case, sometimes.
Of course I name my cars! Izi — a Isuzu bellet forerunner to the toyota corolla. The Tomato — a RED dodge aspen. The upholstery, dash, ceiling, steering wheel, and even the hubcaps were bright red. Then there was Little Red, a red ford station wagon. They gave it to me when Little Red died and I was their primary caregiver. Somehow the dove seemed fitting to the gift. Nice new duds! I recently bought bras online for the first time and it worked.
I liked 1 out of the 2 so I will just order a bunch of those and be done with it. I am so heartened that car naming is actually very common! At least it is amongst you guys. Thank you so much for this post. I have been buying from PB for years and am happy to see that you have too!
I use their things all the time, but often worry that my home will look like one of their catalogues. The constantly changing design though, keeps drawing me back in! You touched on something interesting and that is… most of their stock does age out after a year or two.
Yes, they have a core of staples, but a lot of it does change. So, purchasing a mirror that you love today, might very well not exist in a couple of years.
So, now, you have something that not everyone else has. One time, someone said that they loved Wisteria, but were afraid that the room would look too feminine for the rest of her family. Well, I took a look and even without having to work very hard, I was able to put together an exceedingly handsome and masculine room using only items from Wisteria. I find that the best rooms, however, have elements of both masculine and feminine.
At least, what is traditionally thought of in those terms! I love your post and you have really great content. Very frustrating. I usually just give up! Believe me. My first priority is to have an excellent user experience. The ads are how I fund the site which costs me hefty five figures to run annually.
And, of course, to help fund my need for food and shelter. However, for me, the ads are slower to load, but the content itself is popping right up, both on desktop and mobile. I would try rebooting your device.
So, closing excessive tabs that might be left open might help some.
