The first time I watched this movie with the part with the mermaid in it I was totally baffled about what happened the the mermaid and the sailor, and after reading your comments it got me thinking but in my opinion I believe she did love him and kissed him so they could be together i was a little confused of the part when they went to far out that you couldn't see them but that could of been te time of the sailors transformation between human and merman I'm sorry if this comment was to long :P.
If you watch at the begining of the movie, they bring a guy up-- holding a bible - and he was able to "live under water". That is the "future"-- the movie is the guy telling his story of what happened and meeting the mermaid. If you look at the priest-- his bible is EXACTLY the same as the old man at the beginning of the film, so he lived with her- until either she died or he got "netted".
Actually, if you noticed, what he was holding was a journal of his journey with Ponce De Leon. Finding this old man is what started the Spanish on the hunt for the fountain to destroy it, since of course they can find it now with the help of the joiurnal.

He is a fan of all types of cinema from drama to action, comedy to western, thriller to sci-fi and almost everything else in between although he has a general dislike for most musicals and romantic comedies.
He cites some of his favorite movies as Pulp Fiction, The Big Lebowski, Psycho and Mulholland Drive but finds himself annoyingly garnering new favorites almost every other week.
